Celebrating National Ladies Learning Code Day – November 6
National Ladies Learning Code Day, celebrated on November 6, is a great opportunity to recognise and encourage women and girls who are interested in learning about technology and coding.
The day highlights the importance of making technology more accessible and helping to bridge the gender gap within the tech industry. Its mission is to create beginner-friendly, collaborative and inclusive learning environments where women can develop new skills, build confidence and explore opportunities in technology.
Through live online workshops, virtual booths hosted by partner bootcamps and organisations, and mentorship opportunities, National Ladies Learning Code Day helps people take their first steps into coding, regardless of their previous experience.
Learning to code doesn’t have to be intimidating. Whether you’re interested in website development, software, design or simply curious about how technology works, there are opportunities for everyone to get involved.
It’s also a reminder that the technology industry benefits from having people with different experiences, perspectives and ideas. Encouraging more women to explore digital skills helps create a more diverse and inclusive future for technology.
My Journey into Technology
For me, this day is particularly meaningful because I know first-hand how important encouragement and support can be when finding your place in technology.
I’ve been interested in coding from an early age and eventually chose it as one of my GCSE subjects. However, despite having an interest, I didn’t always feel like technology was an industry I belonged in or that I would be able to take it anywhere.
That started to change when I had a teacher who encouraged me, helped build my confidence and supported me in discovering the area of technology I enjoyed most: coding. Having someone recognise my potential and help me find my strengths made a huge difference and encouraged me to take my interest further.
This led me to study a T Level in Digital Design and Production at college, where I was the only girl in my class. Being in that position made me even more aware of the gender gap in technology and how important it is to encourage more girls and women to consider it as a career path.
During my second year of college, I also started a volunteer placement with Inclusive Bytes CIC. What began as a placement has turned into something I’ve continued to be involved in even after completing it. I’ve had the opportunity to develop new skills, gain valuable experience and explore different areas of technology, all while helping me find my own direction.
Looking back, my journey has shown me just how much difference the right encouragement and opportunities can make. From initially doubting whether technology was for me to continuing to develop my skills and experience, I’ve learned that you don’t need to have everything figured out from the beginning.
That’s why days like National Ladies Learning Code Day are so important. They help create the kind of welcoming and supportive environment that can give someone the confidence to take that first step.
My message to other girls interested in technology is simple: don’t doubt yourself before you’ve even given it a chance. You don’t have to know everything or have your future figured out. Sometimes all it takes is the right support, encouragement and opportunity to help you discover what you’re capable of.
