Dalek Bob
A fully functional, remote-controlled Dalek that turns up at events to meet, greet and spark curiosity about tech.
What happens
Dalek Bob is a battery-powered, remote-controlled Dalek built by our team and young people, complete with lighting, sound and pre-recorded speech. We bring him along to fairs, school visits, open days and other community events, where he moves around, talks, and poses for photos.
Alongside the meet-and-greet, we demonstrate how he works (the robotics, sensors and control systems underneath) and talk about the 3D printing, recycling and creative reuse that went into building him. It’s a chance for the young people and team involved to show off what they’ve made and explain it to a public audience.
He’s operated by a trained team member, with others on hand for crowd management and photos, and the visit often includes a young person on placement learning the ropes.
Benefits
He draws people in who would otherwise walk past a stall, and gives our young people and team a genuine audience for talking about robotics, electronics and coding. It also opens up a conversation about recycling and 3D printing that a static display wouldn’t.
