A head-to-head Mario Kart tournament, with a look behind the scenes at how the game works.
What happens
Players take part in a Mario Kart tournament on consoles set up for a group, racing head-to-head while we keep things fair with proper scoring and tournament structure.
Between races we talk about what’s actually going on under the hood: how controllers and consoles talk to each other, and how physics and game design combine to make Mario Kart feel fast and fun. The same ideas apply to plenty of other games, so it’s a chance to think about how a game people already know well is actually built.
Benefits
It’s competitive without being cutthroat: everyone gets a go, the tournament format keeps it fair, and the between-races chat about game design gives players a reason to think about how their favourite game is actually made.

- Everything needed to run the session: games consoles (such as Nintendo Switch), enough controllers for multiple players, a screen or projector setup, HDMI cables and extension leads, and a scoreboard to track the tournament, nothing for you to source.
