A Digital Inclusivity Manifesto

First principle:

Digital inclusivity begins not with technology but with the problems that people face.

Second principle:

The digital divide can only be narrowed by understanding its human element.

We are committed to

  • Narrowing the digital divide for everyone, regardless of background
  • Empowering both organisations and individuals to make better use of technology
  • Accelerating the impact, sustainability, and efficiency of the of communities, organisations, and individuals through technology
  • Fostering a culture that appreciates the power, humour, and beauty of digital technology
  • Sharing our knowledge, resources, and networks so that everyone can leverage digital skills and technology

We aim to achieve and honour this commitment through values we invite others to adopt:

1.0 Incorporate digital tools into every service

  • Integrate digital tools to enhance problem-solving, streamline operations, and build capacity
  • Adopt and promote safe and secure practices to ensure that technology use is both effective and safe for all users
  • Adopt and promote and follow best practices for digital tools
    Collaborate with other organizations to share resources, practices, and services

Plain English : Technology isn’t just for specialists; everyone can and should help
customers, neighbours, friends, and family make the most of it.

2.0 Ensure everyone’s digital world is as accessible as their physical world

  • Identify and address digital needs and gaps within communities, fostering strong relationships in the process
  • Follow best practices in accessibility, considering physical, mental, cultural, and neurodivergent needs
  • Ensure policies and procedures around technology are easily accessible

Plain English : People with disabilities, non-English speakers, and those with limited
tech skills also use technology—don’t overlook them.

3.0 Encourage a culture that celebrates digital tools and skills

  • Appoint a digital champion to guide and inspire people towards digital tools and skills, fostering a positive and enthusiastic approach to technology
  • Create spaces and opportunities for the community to learn about celebrate digital technology
  • Communicate digital ideas in a positive, jargon-free way.

Plain English : Saying you “don’t do digital” is part of the problem. Aim to embrace
technology and its benefits.

4.0 Increase impact by maximizing efficiency using digital tools

  • Leverage existing tools whenever possible
  • Stay up to date with digital tools to make the best use of available
    resources
  • Embed technology into strategic decision-making to amplify impact and drive sustainable growth

5.0 Champion connectivity wherever possible

  • Utilise open-source software when possible
  • Follow open data standards where appropriate
  • Adopt tools and systems that enable efficient communication and data
    sharing
  • Network with people both online and offline.
