Over the last 6 weeks or so we have been delivering “Learn Tech” sessions with Housing 21, a leading, not for profit provider of retirement living options throughout England, our project focused on a number of schemes around Oldham where we ran sessions for 2 hours per week over a 4 week period.
These sessions are designed for people who have little or no experience using technology and are focused on building confidence, with the belief that if we can get over some of the fears, and show some of the benefits then the rest will come naturally.
During the sessions we get to know our learners and taylor the experience to each of them, with the hope we can find a nugget, some little thing that makes then want to use technology, rather than feeling they have to. For example this could be showing a gardener, PlantNet an app that identifies flowers and plants from a photograph, how to find old photos and videos on YouTube, or how to make video calls with WhatsApp.
Take a look at the gallery below so see a small selection of images from the project.
This project is very much about finding little wins, here are a few from this round of sessions.
- The lady who got hooked on playing solitare on a tablet.
- The lady who now read the daily paper on a tablet via Borrow Box.
- 94 Year old who loves Virtual Reality.
- The gentleman who decided to upgrade his dumb phone to a smart phone.
- The lady who now makes WhatsApp calls to her American pen friend.
Anyway, that’s enough of what we thought about the project, watch the video below to find out more about what the learners thought.
