Like many organisations we needed a way to stay in touch, and while we could have just created one big Whatsapp group we wanted to be able to group people together for certain projects, ie out amazing interns dont need to be involved in conversations about admin, and our fantastic admin team don’t need to be involved in conversations about cyber security. So we wanted to find something that would do this, but hopefully not cost the earth.
This is where we found Zulip who describe themselves as “Zulip is an open-source modern team chat app designed to keep both live and asynchronous conversations organized.” offer a self hosted version which we set up on Digital Ocean, and a free licence not non profits that unlock all of the features, which made this the idea solution for us.
As a bonus because it is open source and has a full API we can make things talk to it, so now when someone rings the door bell it gets anounced in the chat! So huge thanks to Zulip for their support.
