Over the past eight weeks, we’ve had the absolute privilege of helping young people in Chadderton South discover the joy of technology through Empowering Young Innovators. This hands-on STEM program was packed with coding, electronics, 3D printing, robotics, and pure creative energy.
Delivered in partnership with Fullcircle NW CIC, and funded by Great Places Housing and The National Lottery, the program was designed by Inclusive Bytes to spark curiosity, build confidence, and open up new opportunities for children aged 7 to 12. It was especially aimed at those who might not usually see themselves in the world of STEM.
What We Did
From laser-cutting parts to coding mini robots and building simple circuits, the sessions were a full-on tech adventure. But this was never just about tech. It was about bringing people together, encouraging exploration, and letting kids take the lead in shaping their own learning journeys.
Even better, we saw young people grow in confidence every week. Whether they were debugging their code, assembling a robot, or getting stuck into an engineering challenge, they tackled it with imagination and teamwork.
“I am sad this is over. I have learnt so much and loved the Robot Wars!” – Participant
“My son has enjoyed every minute… he looks forward to something different each week and the new skills he has learnt.” – Parent
Real Impact, Real Outcomes
-
14 young people achieved one or more AQA Unit Award Scheme certificates as a brilliant way to recognise their hard work and new skills.
-
85% average attendance across the full program showed how engaged and excited the young people were.
-
3 T-Level students from Oldham College gained valuable work experience supporting the sessions.
Why This Matters
Inclusive Bytes founder, Andy Powell, summed it up:
“This course was about more than just tech. It was about sparking curiosity and showing young people what’s possible. I’m so proud of what the young people achieved, and grateful to everyone involved. That includes the Fullcircle youth workers who backed something a bit different, and the students who helped run it all.”
“With Professor Brian Cox highlighting the importance of STEM careers during his recent visit to Oldham, we think this kind of grassroots, hands-on, creative STEM learning is more important than ever.”
Thank You
We couldn’t have done it without the brilliant partnership with Fullcircle NW CIC, whose team brought a fresh approach to youth engagement by offering a creative, tech-based alternative to the usual sports and music activities. We’re also hugely thankful to our funders:
-
Great Places Housing through their Resilience Fund, supporting projects that help communities thrive
-
The National Lottery Community Fund, which powers thousands of life-changing initiatives every year thanks to National Lottery players
We believe this project is a shining example of what happens when community, creativity, and digital opportunity come together.
Stay tuned. We’ve got more exciting projects in the works, and we’ll keep championing those ‘geeky kids’ who just need the right space to shine.
